About the session

Depression in children and adolescents is a major public health problem. Prevention and treatment can help reduce the disease burden of depression. In this lecture I will give an overview of the research on preventing the onset of major depression in youth and I will show that prevention is indeed possible but also faces important challenges in terms of effectiveness and implementation. I will also present a roadmap to future research. The other subject that will be presented in this lecture is treatment of depression in children and adolescents. Based on large meta-analytic databases, I will show that treatments work but also have important limitations. A framework for improving outcomes and reducing the disease burden of depression in young people will be presented.

Learning objectives

1. To understand the effects of prevention of depression in youth
2. To understand how effective treatments are
3. To understand the research agenda for how to improve prevention and treatment of depression
