JCPP is proud to present a FREE live stream webinar. This curtain-raiser celebrates the launch of the JCPP Special issue 2019 – Suicide and self-harm: Pathways for Minimizing Suicide & Premature Deaths and Maximizing Hope and Wellbeing.

About the day

The Special Issue edition, edited by Professor Joan Asarnow and Dr. Dennis Ougrin. It includes 10 research papers, alongside clinical commentary, all receiving great reviews during the peer review process. It includes some truly groundbreaking research and ‘game-changing’ insights.

This is part of the JCPP 60th Anniversary celebrations we will be broadcasting live from the Royal College of Physicians, London, to an invited audience, hearing from some of the sector’s most respected figures.

About the speakers

Professor Joan Rosenbaum Asarnow
Professor Joan Rosenbaum Asarnow

Joan is a JCPP Subject Specialist Editor, Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and a clinical psychologist. Her current work focuses on interventions and service delivery strategies for improving health and mental health in youth, with an emphasis on suicide/suicide attempt prevention and depression. She has led efforts to disseminate evidence-based treatments for child and adolescent depression and suicide prevention, working across multiple service settings including emergency departments, primary care, mental health, and school settings.

Dr. Dennis Ougrin
Dr. Dennis Ougrin

Dennis is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. He graduated from a medical school in Ukraine in 1998 and came to England to undertake his post-graduate training. He completed his higher training in child and adolescent psychiatry at Guy’s and Maudsley. Dennis is currently a consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist leading Supported Discharge Service at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. He is also a clinical senior lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience. His main professional interests include prevention of Borderline Personality Disorder and effective interventions for self-harm. He is the author of Therapeutic Assessment, a novel model of assessment for young people with self-harm.

Dr Abby Russell
Dr. Abby Russell

Abby Russell is a Senior Research Associate in Epidemiology at the Centre for Academic Mental Health, University of Bristol Medical School. She was awarded her PhD in 2016 from the University of Exeter Medical School. Abby’s background is in Psychology, and her research interests are the causes, consequences and treatment of child and adolescent mental health problems, with a particular focus on self-harm and ADHD.

Professor Lars Mehlum
Professor Lars Mehlum

Lars is the founding director of the National Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention at the Institute of Clinical Medicine, University of Oslo, Norway. Mehlum is a psychiatrist and psychotherapist. He has had many leader positions on national and international levels. He is the current president of the International Academy of Suicide Research, vice president of the ISSPD, a past president of the ESSPD and the International Association of Suicide Prevention and has acted as an advisor for national suicide preventive strategies to the European Union and in numerous countries. The founding editor of the journal ‘Suicidologi’ published since 1996 he is also a member of the editorial board of the three leading international suicidological journals Suicide & Life-Threatening Behaviour, Archives of Suicide Research and Crisis. He has published widely on these subjects and received several national and international awards. On a part time basis he maintains a private practice in psychiatry in the city of Oslo.

Professor David Cottrell
Professor David Cottrell

David was appointed Foundation Chair in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at Leeds in 1994. He was Associate Medical Director for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in Leeds for many years and has a wide experience of the development, management, delivery and evaluation of child and adolescent mental health services. His research interests are in the evaluation of psychological interventions and of Child and Adolescent Mental Health services. He was a co-author of the NICE guidelines on the management of depression in children and young people. His current research interests continue to focus on self-harm in young people.
