About the talks
Intellectual Disabilities CAMHS: Parent/Carer Workshops – Foundation and ASCEND, Emma Dyson (SaLT), Dave Smallman (Nurse/Team Lead) and Kym McMahon (Specialist Practitioner/Mental Health and ID/OT background)
Gain an outline of the remit of ID CAMHS, including service criteria and the service offer. A key element of the service offer is psychoeducation, including parent/carer workshops. These workshops aim to underpin the clinical intervention provided by supporting parents/carers to have a better understanding of their child’s difficulties, and strategies they can implement to improve the wellbeing of themselves and their children. We will discuss the content covered in two workshops; The ID CAMHS Foundation Course and ASCEND, as well as the method of delivery, and the outcome measures used. We will also discuss the impact of the courses and parental feedback obtained.
Learning objectives:
- To understand the structure and remit of ID CAMHS and the families we work with.
- To understand the rationale and benefits of providing parent/carer training as part of the service offer.
- To understand the content included in the Foundation and ASCEND courses and the delivery methods.
Nova Bovaird and Morna Spence – Dorset Mental Health Support Teams in Schools
In 2017, the Government published its Green Paper for Transforming children and young people’s mental health, proposing increased access to mental healthcare for children and young people via school and college settings. The initiative was to be overseen by NHS England and the Department for Education. Between 2018-2022 14 pilot sites were funded, Dorset MHST was one of these sites, and was established in January 2020. The challenge of the COVID 19 pandemic on initial set up and delivery was enormous, and the impact of the pandemic continues to be seen both within our working practice and on the children and young people referred to our service. In March 2022 we became a fully launched service and had expanded our teams and access considerably. There was initially a drive to have 100% education provision coverage nationally by 2024. This has now been adjusted and the aim is to have 50% coverage by the end of 2026. Within Dorset and BCP we have 47% coverage, but this will increase to 54% by the end of the academic year with further training being provided to more staff.
