About the event

Creating a trauma informed and mentally healthy culture in schools benefits every member of the school community: staff parents and most significantly children and young people. A whole school approach ensures that every child grows, develop sand learns in a psychologically safe environment that protects their mental health and ensures they are supported to achieve their full potential and develop the capacity to live life well. Children enter the school system either with the advantage of experiences that allow them to take every opportunity offered to them or disadvantaged by their experiences of adversity. They then find themselves further disadvantaged by the responses to the adaptive behaviours that have helped them survive. This can leave young people with limited pathways to health, wellbeing and success. School as a pathway to public health ensures that the environment promotes psychological safety, enables equity and inclusion and facilitates children to be able to live life well, interrupting the cycle of intergenerational trauma.

Learning outcomes

  • To understand how adversity alters brain and body systems which can translate into behaviours that challenge society.
  • To understand the components of a mentally healthy and trauma informed culture in school.
  • To identify the ways in which schools can create psychological safety and support the recovery from adversity.

I am passionate about inclusion, supporting children and young people to be the best they can be by helping them to remove the barriers preventing full engagement in life and learning.
