This webinar looked at ‘Medical Emergencies in Eating Disorders (MEED)’ the new guidance, produced by the Royal College of Psychiatrists and endorsed by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, with perspectives from clinicians, paediatricians, dieticians, parents/carers, and lived experience. It was organised by the London and South East ACAMH Branch.

About the session
Our speakers have a wealth of experience in this area: they include an experienced paediatrician, dietician, child and adolescent psychiatrists, people with lived experience of eating disorders and parents/carers. They will give an overview of the MEED guidance and share their experiences of how to work collaboratively across disciplines and with commissioners to ensure that medical emergencies in people with eating disorders are identified and managed safely and well.

About the speakers
Consultant Senior Lecturer in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, University of Bristol. Dr. Bould is a child and adolescent psychiatrist and researcher. Her main area of research is in eating disorders. She is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists Faculty of Eating Disorders, for whom she is the lead for disseminating the new Medical Emergencies in Eating Disorders guideline.
Patient Representative Royal College of Psychiatrists. James is a mental health campaigner, peer researcher and expert by experience in eating disorders. He holds various roles at the Royal College of Psychiatrists and NHS England aimed at improving support for those experiencing mental health problems and eating disorders, and for their carers. James also represents various UK mental health charities and is a yoga and barre teacher. He has written extensively about his own experiences with the hope that those who read his work find comfort, affirmation and hope.
Advanced Specialist Eating Disorders Dietitian – East London NHS Foundation Trust and Research Dietitian – Imperial College London. Sarah has worked with children and young people with eating disorders for over 15 years and is a clinical advisor to BEAT the national eating disorders charity. Sarah has two research interests and has published papers in both areas, veganism in eating disorders and feeding under restraint in inpatient settings. Sarah is received funding from NHS England for her research and is currently working at Imperial College London for this. Sarah was also placed on the British Dietetic Association’s Roll of Honor in 2020 for her research into feeding under restraint. Sarah has a number of teaching positions: for the Royal College of Paediatrics education regarding eating disorder, for Health Education England national eating disorders teaching programme and has an honorary contract at the University of Northampton for their Child and Adolescent Mental Health masters programme.
Suzanne Baker works alongside others to move towards better outcomes for all those affected by Eating Disorders. She is the Carer Representative for the Faculty of Eating Disorders at the Royal College of Psychiatrists and sits on the FEAST UK Task Force Executive Committee (www.feast-ed.org). Suzanne is a member of both the Experts by Experience Committee at the Academy for Eating Disorders (www.aedweb.org) and the Scientific Programme Committee for AED ICED 2023. She sits on several NHS CRG Working Groups for Eating Disorders and is involved in SLAM’s Whole Team Training Programme for Adult Eating Disorder teams in England, representing the carer lived experience voice. Suzanne has two daughters who are both in recovery from Anorexia Nervosa.
I have been the clinical lead for the specialist community eating disorders service in the Manchester Foundation Trust for the past 5 years. I am also the quality improvement lead in the Faculty of Eating Disorders at the RCPSYCH, and I also represent the Faculty at the Quality Network for Eating Disorders’ advisory group.
Dr. Suhair Abbass
Dr. Abbas completed her training in psychiatry in Manchester and is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. She has been a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist for over thirteen years, She has been working in mental health services for over twenty years. Throughout her career Dr. Abbas has been involved in leadership Functions, teaching and training of medical workforce.
