About the session
The ability to understand a child’s needs and respond to them with empathy is key to creating and sustaining the lasting relationships that mitigate against the impact of adverse childhood experiences. Three quarters of children in care have significant mental health needs, but only one in eight of them access mental health services. Services are overwhelmed by demand, and there are long waiting lists to see specialist clinicians.
We need a means to identify needs and tailor support at scale. BERRI is an innovative digital tool set designed to identify the needs of individual children, in terms of their Behaviour, Emotional-wellbeing, ability to form Relationships, Risk to self/others, and Indicators of neurodiversity or psychiatric conditions. It is the first properly validated measure of the main psychological risk factors for the child’s trajectory that can provide individualised reports with advice for caregivers. An independent social and economic impact analysis has shown 108x ROI for local authorities by using the tools, and 143 children who were living in residential settings have been identified and assisted to move to family-based care, saving over £60million of placement costs for the public purse.
Data gathered by BERRI can potentially be used to advise commissioners about what placements/services are required, and track which are effective, to improve outcomes and value-for-money. BERRI data shows that children in different placement types have different patterns of need and risk, which are not always matched with provision, yet the most effective services can help children to make progress more than twice as fast as is typical.
Learning outcomes
1. To understand the potential of digital screening to identify psychological needs at scale
2. To understand the strengths and limitations of digital tools
3. To understand the key factors in the needs of children in care, and how these relate to the clinical themes we might be familiar with
4. To understand the social and economic impact of improving outcomes for children in care
5. To gain an overview of the level of need and risk amongst children in care, of different ages and in different types of placement (including the differences between in-house fostering and independent fostering agencies, and the difference beween 16-18 year-olds in residential care and supported accommodation)
